In response to the lack of a worldwide consensus on which patients should receive thromboprophylaxis, combined with the increasing volume of evidence in support of thromboprophylaxis in acutely ill medical patients, an internationally relevant risk-assessment model (RAM) is being developed. The aim of this RAM is to help physicians identify medical patients at risk of VTE and decide whether they should receive thromboprophylaxis.
