Dr Rickles was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1942. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois and trained as a postgraduate in internal medicine and hematology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, New York. He served in US Army and was Director of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Laboratory at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research from 1971-1974. Dr Rickles then went to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 1974, where he became Professor of Medicine and Laboratory Medicine and Chief, Hematology-Oncology Division. He was awarded the Physicians Health Services/American Red Cross Chair in Transfusion Medicine by the University of Connecticut and served also as Chief of Hematology-Oncology at their affiliated Veterans Administration Medical Center. In 1993 Dr Rickles became the Deputy Chief, Hematologic Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Emory University, and Director of the Emory University Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, Atlanta, Georgia.
Since 1998 Dr Rickles has been with The George Washington University Medical Center as Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Associate Vice President for Research, and he is also an attending physician at the George Washington University Hospital and the Children's National Medical Center. Currently, he oversees the US$28 million research budget of the medical center, and directs the research program for the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Dr Rickles currently serves on several study sections at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense and has served on study sections for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. He was Chairman of the Subcommittee on Coagulation and Malignancy for the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis and is on the Subcommittee of Vascular Biology and Thrombosis for the American Society of Hematology. He was Vice President of the Medical and Scientific Affairs for the National Hemophilia Foundation and was a founding member of the Executive Committee of the Hemophilia Research Society.
Dr Rickles is the author of over 120 papers in refereed journals, 10 book chapters and 20 comprehensive reviews in his areas of interest, which include thrombosis in cancer, hemophilia and von Willebrand disease, and his basic laboratory research into the regulation of tissue factor gene expression and its role in tumor biology. Most recently, Dr Rickles' research group has published studies of the regulation of tumor angiogenesis by tissue factor and designing novel therapeutic approaches to anticoagulation and anti-angiogenesis in cancer. He sits on the Editorial Board of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and has also been on the Editorial Board of Blood Coagulation and Fibrinolysis.
