Juan I. Arcelus graduated in Medicine from the University of Granada School of Medicine, Granada, Spain, in 1982 and obtained a PhD, specializing in thrombosis, from the same university in 1998. Having completed his residency in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University Hospital of Granada, Dr Arcelus served a Research Fellowship in the Department of Surgery at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, USA, from 1989 to 1992. In addition, he was appointed as an associate staff member at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois, USA, where he was Associate Director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Group from 1990 to 1992. He also participated actively in a number of studies conducted at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, USA.
Dr Arcelus has been Professor of Surgery at the University of Granada Medical School in Granada, Spain, since 2002 and practices as an attending staff member in the Department of Surgery at the Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves, also in Granada. He frequently acts as visiting professor to several hospitals and universities in Spain and other countries and has delivered over 70 lectures in several countries. His main research interests include the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and follow-up of venous thromboembolism in general and orthopedic surgery patients, both in and out of hospital.
Dr Arcelus has participated, as an active faculty member, in the past two International Consensus Conferences on Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism, held in Windsor and London, UK. A member of numerous societies, including the Royal Academy of Medicine in Granada, Spain, he has presented over 160 abstracts at international meetings, published more than 60 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, and written several book chapters.
